after we said goodbye to jason in germany, the girls and i headed on to brussels. our plan was to visit for about 4 days and then head to paris for a few days. well...we got there and kinsey got sick...she got really sick. so...we managed to visit the corner store...we basically stayed in the hotel for 4 days because her fever just wouldn't go away. i didn't mind too much. it gave us a nice break from all our craziness during the previous 2 weeks. ;)
we did return to brussels after our trip to paris. almost all of these pics came during that visit. we had a very good cab driver from the airport and he told us a lot about the folks living in belgium and quite a bit about it's history. i didn't realize that they speak dutch and french there. i could throw out a few french words here and there but dutch???? forget about it! i hadn't even heard that language spoken before!!! ha ha ha.
just a quick update for folks, the capital of the euroean union is in brussels, spelled bruxelles in french, and nato is located there as well. this makes the area very diverse. i believe someone told me there were over 140 nations represented in the city. i can not find that particular statistic so i may be totally feeding you a line of bull...forgive me. ;)
here's a few pics of our brief tour through the city...
this is what i saw for the 4 days of our first visit. that would be the building across from our hotel. ;) the girls watched cartoons, slept and played and i read. fun times!
we visited the royal museum of fine arts. no pictures allowed. :( but i did manage a shot of the entry way. :)))
the fountain in the petit sablon square. these gardens have 10 statues around the fountain. tell me if you recognize the fella in the next image.
this is none other than belgian cartographer gerardus mercator. that was your first guess wasn't it?!! :) the mercator projection world map was named after him. you'll see these types of maps in every classroom in the US...i should say hopefully every classroom in the US. this map proved to be very helpful to navigators so they could sail across the ocean on a straight path.
my travel companions. :))))) how used to heat are we? this pic was in july!!!!! full long pants, sweat shirts. geeze...
we must find the peeing boy of brussels! reagan saw him in a magazine on an airplane the summer before so he was a must find. ;) this was taken while we were hunting him down. ;)
a deceptive little alley. the greenery was painted on the building. i like how they made it look so lush and beautiful.
brussels is famous for it's comic strip art. this is one of the pieces we saw during our journey...
look who i saw chillin!!!!!
another piece of art on the wall. love this stuff!!
so did we find the peeing boy of brussels? you'll have to check in tomorrow and see. ;)))
